Understanding Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

What is IBS? Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the lower bowel or colon, impacting around 20% of Australians. IBS is characterized by a combination of symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, which can cause significant discomfort and affect quality of life.

Symptoms of IBS

  • Abdominal Pain: Often relieved by passing wind or a bowel movement.
  • Bowel Habit Changes: Alternating episodes of diarrhea and constipation.
  • Bloating: A feeling of abdominal fullness or swelling.
  • Mucus in Stools: Presence of white mucus in stools.
  • Incomplete Evacuation: Sensation that the bowels are not fully emptied after passing a stool.
  • Nausea: Occasional upset stomach.

Potential Triggers of IBS

  • Dietary Factors: Certain foods can exacerbate symptoms, including lactose from dairy products and fructose from syrups.
  • Infections: Previous gastrointestinal infections can trigger IBS symptoms.
  • Stress: Emotional stress can affect bowel function.
  • Medications: Some medications like antibiotics and antacids can influence bowel habits.

Diagnosing IBS IBS should be diagnosed by a healthcare professional who will rule out other conditions such as autoimmune disorders or gluten intolerance. Diagnostic methods may include:

  • Medical Examination: Comprehensive check-up including a review of medical history.
  • Laboratory Tests: Blood and stool tests to exclude other diseases.
  • Colonoscopy: Direct visualization of the bowel to check for structural problems.

Managing IBS While there is no cure for IBS, management focuses on alleviating symptoms by identifying and avoiding individual triggers:

  • Dietary Changes: Increase fiber intake, reduce high-gas foods like onions and beans, and decrease consumption of lactose-containing products.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Reduce stress and limit intake of alcohol and artificial sweeteners.
  • Medication: Certain medications can help manage symptoms, but should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

Professional Guidance Recommended It is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and personalized management plan if you suspect you have IBS or experience persistent gastrointestinal symptoms.
